Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC), is a medical college in Barisal,Bangladesh. SBMC was established in 1969 and is run under the administration of the University of Dhaka. It was named after A. K. Fazlul Huq, known by his nickname of “Sher-e-Bangla” which means “Tiger of Bangla”, a leading Bengali statesman and former prime minister of Pakistan in the first half of the 20th century, who practiced law in Barisal.

About 180 students are admitted there every year. There are three hostels for male students and two for the female students. Both male and female intern doctors have each one hostel. The Sher-e-Bangla Medical College hospital is the second largest hospital in Bangladesh, which is confined within the college, serves more than 2000 patients each term, though its nominal capacity is for just 1200 patients.For this reason new buildings for hospital are established.This medical college has a bright history.

Admission :- Admission test examination is conducted by Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Bangladesh. In this medical college along with graduation course (MBBS) there is also provision for post graduation courses (MD, MS, Diploma).

Sher-e-Bangla Medical College located in the southeastern part of Barisal town on the bank of river Kirtonkhola. The college has an area of about 33 ha. Student dormitories, nursing institute, nurses’ training institute, dormitory for staff nurses, and residences of teachers are situated on the campus.

Centre for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound, Model Family Planning Clinic, Medical central mosque, Agrani Bank, Female student’s hostel, Internee hostels, Nurses training institute, residential building for teachers and staffs, auditorium, Morgue 2 are all in the charpara campus. Residential buildings for (MLSS) staff at Mashkanda. infectious disease section is located about half a kilometer away from college premises in SK hospital. The male student hostels are located about half a kilometer away in the old Lytton medical school campus.

In addition to MBBS course there are also Postgraduate courses such as MD; MS, Diploma & MPH courses. Gross eligibility for candidature: Bangladeshi national passed HSC examination within immediate two passed session with total GPA 7.0 (SSC+HSC) with Biology in HSC. Written examinations are MCQ type on the basis of HSC syllabus on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and General Knowledge. Answer scripts are examined centrally by OMR machine and final selection are given by DGHS as per merit and quota.

All the post-graduate courses are approved by The Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine and Research, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. After Completion of 2 years after Graduation (MBBS), Two years of service for government candidate, Govt. candidate who completed another postgraduate degree al least before2 years, Non-government candidate after 1 year of completing internship, One year training on the respective subject for Diploma degree. Admission Test conducted at least 2 months before commencing the session, MCQ true false completion type on the basic concepts of overall medical science, Answer sheets are examined by OMR machine, Selection is given as per merit and quota (Government 50% Non- Government 50%).
